Australian filmmaker brothers, Kiah and Tristan Roache-Turner’s, hotly anticipated Nekrotronic, the follow-up to Wyrmwood, will have its world premiere at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival.
The Create NSW-supported film from Entertainment One (eOne), Hopscotch Features and Guerilla Films, which shot at Fox Studios Australia and also showcases the work of other Ausfilm members SLATEVFX and Trackdown, has been selected for Midnight Madness, the hugely popular late-night program showcasing just ten genre films from around the world.
Nekrotronic is a mind-bending, genre-mashing, sci-fi action-packed comedy – funny, scary, thrilling and high octane, it is a cinematic roller-coaster which traverses the full spectrum of human (and inhuman) emotion. Australian filmmaker brothers, Kiah and Tristan Roache-Turner return with their masterful mix of gore and comedy, prominent in their 2014 debut feature, Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead, which was a festival hit and took the fanboy world by storm.
Nekrotronic is directed by Kiah Roache-Turner, written by both brothers, and produced by Andrew Mason and Troy Lum for Hopscotch Features, together with Tristan Roache-Turner for Guerilla Films.
Monica Bellucci (The Passion of the Christ, The Matrix Reloaded), Ben O’Toole (Detroit, 12 Strong), Caroline Ford (Once Upon A Time), Tess Haubrich (Alien: Covenant), Bob Savea (Fantail) and David Wenham (The Lord of the Rings) star.
Finnegan (Bellucci), the world’s greatest demon-hunting Nekromancer turned bad, is the first to discover evil spirits inside the internet, taking the mythical battle between good and evil into the digital realm. Years later, down-on-his-luck sewerage-waste worker Howard North (O’Toole) and Nekromancer sisters Molly (Ford) and Torquel (Haubrich) must destroy the plague of online demons and defeat the evil Finnegan before she can devour the souls of a million human beings addicted to their phones.
Kiah and Tristan Roache-Turner said, “We grew up watching John Carpenter and Sam Raimi films and reading insane sci-fi comic books. Nekrotronic has taken those elements and blended them together in a giant cinematic meat grinder – we are beyond stoked to unleash this movie into the world and share our vision with genre-loving eyeballs everywhere!”
On premiering in TIFF’s Midnight Madness, Troy Lum and Andrew Mason said,
The Roache-Turner brothers caught our attention with their underground zombie epic, Wyrmwood, and their natural talent for infusing the classic genre elements with their eccentric Australian world view. Working with them to raise the level for their equally unconventional Nekrotronic has been insane and exciting, and there couldn’t be a more perfect platform to premiere the film than TIFF’s Midnight Madness.
Nekrotronic shot in Sydney at Fox Studios Australia, Australia, with principal production investment from Entertainment One and Screen Australia, and financed with support from Create NSW. Entertainment One will distribute the film, with Sierra/Affinity handling worldwide sales. Entertainment One will release Nekrotronic in Australian cinemas in 2019.
The Toronto International Film Festival runs from September 6-16, 2018.
