Aaron Pedersen and Judy Davis will star in Mystery Road – The Series, a six-part spin-off from Ivan Sen’s internationally acclaimed and award-winning feature films Mystery Road and Goldstone and will be filmed in Western Australia’s remote and breathtaking northern Kimberley region.
Detective Jay Swan (Aaron Pedersen) is assigned to investigate the mysterious disappearance of two young farm hands on an outback cattle station. One is a local Australian Indigenous footy hero, and the other a backpacker. Working with local cop Emma James (Judy Davis), Jay’s investigation uncovers a past injustice that threatens the fabric of the whole community.
“The series will put the Kimberley’s unique landscape on the world stage,” said Ian Booth, Screenwest Chief Executive. “Audiences will get to see the versatility of Western Australian locations.”
The series has received funding support from Screenwest and the Western Australian Regional Film Fund supported by Royalties for Regions.
Launched in July 2016, the Western Australian Regional Film Fund is committed to making strategic investments that encourage regional film industry activity, build local capacity and contribute to the livability and vibrancy of local communities.
Mystery Road – The Series is the second project to go into production with the Regional Film Fund’s support, following Ben Elton’s feature film Three Summers which makes its world premiere at the Melbourne International Film Festival in August and has been selected as a finalist vying for the coveted $100,000 film prize at the CinefestOZ Film Festival.
Judy Davis is a Perth born actress and recipient of multiple AACTA, Emmy®, Golden Globe® and BAFTA Awards as well as multi-time Academy Award® nominee.
Directed by Rachel Perkins (Jasper Jones, Bran Nue Day), produced by David Jowsey (Jasper Jones, Goldstone) and Greer Simpkin (Goldstone), Mystery Road – The Series is script produced by Michaeley O’Brien, who writes with Steven McGregor, Jon Bell and Tim Lee and Western Australian Kodie Bedford. Ivan Sen and the ABC’s Sally Riley and Kym Goldsworthy will executive produce.
Filming commences in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia next month and set to premiere on Australia’s ABC network in 2018.
