Melbourne and regional Victoria proved to be the perfect backdrop for BBC One’s enthralling psychological thriller The Cry.
Over six million people tuned in when The Cry premiered in the UK last year and it notched up 10 million+ plays via BBCs i-player, landing the four-part series at sixth spot in the BBC’s Top Ten requested shows of 2018, behind global hits including Bodyguard, Killing Eve and Doctor Who.
In the US, where it aired on the Sundance channel in January, and Australia, where it recently began showing on the ABC, audiences and critics alike embraced the series, with the Guardian Australia describing The Cry as “a brilliant, gobsmacking drama – and a must-watch.”
Victorian director Glendyn Ivin and the team from Synchronicity Films made the most of Melbourne’s inner city neighbourhoods and Victorian architecture, as well as the capital city’s proximity to picturesque coastlines, wild beaches, rolling hills and agricultural settings, to tell the story of a young couple dealing with an unthinkable tragedy.
Film Victoria sat down with UK-based Executive Producer Claire Mundell to talk about her experience of filming on location in Melbourne and regional Victoria – and discovered the question Claire now asks for every project on Synchronicity Films’ slate.
The Cry was supported through Film Victoria’s Production Incentive Attraction Fund and Regional Location Assistance Fund.
